I've always been a little bit of an Asia fan. Back in university days, I took Japanese studies. I was probably the slowest student in class when we translated Japanese into Finnish; occasionally the teacher got frustrated and just skipped over me in the middle of my sentence. In interiors, I also like to reflect this interest, in small doses however. There's the Buddha on the mantel, a little Chinese lantern, a Japanese Tansu chest in the living room.
I've seen a lot of Japanese magazines and craft books in Finnish blogs recently, and just had to find out if these are available in California.
Well guess what: there is a real Japanese heaven here in San Diego. It's called Mitsuwa Marketplace. A big building where you can find among other things books, Japanese groceries, sushi, ceramics and a restaurant. A bowl of rice, egg and chicken with some miso soup and pickle costs under five dollars.
And the books! The craft books were from 5 to 10 euros a piece. Rows and rows of books. I stood there for two hours (not kidding) and just skimmed thru.
I ended up buying a couple of books and some magazines that were 65 percent off (July issues). They have really nice photography, and provide pretty good inspiration for projects. Somebody was supposed to be sleeping already but came downstairs to see what I was doing. Mama, will you come up and lie down with me until I fall asleep? (Just guess who falls asleep first when I do that.)
